Following on from last week’s post Twilight Rain, we are delighted to walk around the beaver wetlands during daylight hours to take a closer look at the landscape they have created.
Beavers were hunted to extinction in Scotland during the 16th century and we are delighted they are now being reintroduced as part of a rewilding programme. Conservation groups, green lairds and eco-farmers are working together and so far, the results are very positive.
They use stones, mud, grass, twigs and branches to create dams, beaver channels and beaver pools. The resulting wetlands are teaming with insects, plants and wildflowers and have attracted otters, water voles, herons, ducks and many invertebrates and amphibians.
Trees felled by beavers offer a natural form of coppicing and a welcoming habitat to fungi, insects and birds, such as owls and woodpeckers.
Even when the beavers are asleep, you can see their hand in everything around you.
Wishing you all a wonderful Wednesday and a peaceful rest of the week,
with love from Xenia xxx
