Silent Sunday: Sweet Inspiration

It was a lovely surprise when this young swan pair made their nest on the river. They and their three remaining cygnets are a true inspiration and continue to lift the spirits of our community in these challenging times.

Wishing you all a peaceful Sunday and a blessed week ahead,

This has been a regular dish for us during the lockdown, once fresh tomatoes and spinach were available. We experimented with many different seasonings and lovage became our favourite.

We’re delighted that this haiku is featured in Haiku Dialogue: The Way of the Chef, Troutswirl, The Haiku Foundation Blog, 24 June 2020. A very big thank you to guest editor Craig Kittner and post manager Lori Zajkowski for putting this edition together.

Thank you again for all your good wishes before we went on our blogging break and we hope you had a lovely week and Solstice too!

Silent Sunday: Swans and Sweet Cicely

a swan on her nest between long grass and sweet cicely
a contented looking pen (female swan) on her nest

We are delighted that a young pair of swans moved in after our older pair left the river.

The pen (female swan) was born here four years ago. She would have joined a flock after leaving her parents and met her cob along the way.

It is lovely that she has returned to the place where her life began. She is familiar with the terrain, the tides and the feeding grounds. Yesterday, her first cygnets hatched.

The nest is surrounded by tall grasses and Sweet Cicely, which provide a good buffer for the strong winds we have at the moment.

Swans are doting parents who give their offspring the best possible start in life for the long journey ahead.

It is a treat to see how patient herons are when using these trusted old methods to catch a new meal every day.

At the same I felt for the small fish and said a few prayers for him and his family.
