Haibun: I’ll Show You the Sea

Let me show you the turquoise sea, how deep and soft the sand can be. You’ll see the gulls glide on the wind and catch a fish. There will be people here on the nicer days. Some people are tall, some small. Some will bring a bucket and spade and build us a castle.

Here in the Highlands sheep will often be free to roam from pasture to cliff, from cliff to beach and back again. At this time of year the ewes will show their lambs where to go.

  10. Sheep on the beach, omg, so cute! I couldn’t get enough of seeing the mama’s and their lambs a few weeks ago. I think my husband was getting annoyed with me for stopping to photograph them so often. 😀

      1. It must be. Our neighbour keeps sheep but he only lets them live until they’re twelve months old then he butchers them (himself, in a shed, with a knife). Every day we count them to check that they’re all there.

  25. so many of these Haibun have so beautifully shown the aspect of nature of parents showing the offpsring the way or the beauties. The Ewe showing the lamb the sea… at first light, both the light of day breaking and the knowlege dawning in the young one’s mind of this vast ocean. Carol’s checking of peas in the pod, like little ones for whom we worry, jut to joyful find that they are just right. The comfort to the young in Merrill’s baking aroma of cinnamon winter love and treats for the lil ones on a cold day, with the end product not being pastry so much as safety and love. Christine’s painting of boring vacation car rides ending in blackberry bramble glory. Many more can be mentioned, and they have all touched my heart so tenderly. I think maybe there was a need to impart these words and feelings and pictures into not only our Childrens’ lexicon, but into their lives. Also a lot of magic and mysticism in this prompt. We perhaps have added to the spell to let these words live. Merrill got us on the right track. This mother ewe awakening the lamb, so masterfully done, you have shown us to see.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words dear Lona 🙂💜 There are so many wonderful haibun here, they would make a lovely collection in print for future generations to enjoy. This is an inspiring time of year, with ewes showing their lambs the way, swans showing their cygnets how to pull up pond weeds from below the water and soon the seagulls will be encoraging their chicks with their first flying lessons. It’s all about new life and new ways of enjoying the natural world around us 🙂💖 xxx
