We were treated to a rare visit by basking sharks yesterday who came to feed on the plankton in the Moray Firth before starting their long migration to warmer climes.
They were swimming and feeding close to paddle boarders, kayaks and sailing boats and the people aboard featured in many of my photographs as a result.
If you recognise yourself in the image above or the slideshow below please get in touch through the contact form and I’ll be happy to send you a copy of the photograph.
We were watching from the shore and it was lovely to see these gentle giants.
Wishing you all a wonderful Wednesday,
with love from Xenia xxx

Oh wow, magical creatures. I think I read one tagged of the west coast of Ireland was subsequently seen off the Scottish coast

Thank you dear Karina, it was amazing to see them 😀 I read the shark that was tagged in Ireland was seen on the West coast of Scotland recently and the dorsal fin looked very similar to one of the sharks I saw yesterday. I took a photograph of it and will send a copy to the Irish team that tagged it. I could see only three basking sharks and was told there were actually five here💚🦈

There was some amazing footage taken with a drone off County Clare this year – and another from Achill island – this is link to Clare one. https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/0902/1162847-rare-drone-footage-of-basking-shark-behaviour-off-clare/#:~:text=Rare%20drone%20footage%20shows%20basking,the%20Irish%20Basking%20Shark%20Group.&text=Basking%20sharks%20are%20harmless%20plankton%20feeders.

What a treat! An exciting thing to see, I imagine. They can be seen in the Gulf of Mexico in winter, though I’ve never personally seen one. Gentle giants for sure. 🙂

Wow, how fantastic, Xenia 👏 I love how you captured the happiness on everyone’s faces as they enjoyed being close to the sharks. I’ve encountered them up close as well, and they are huge 😃

It really was; we were on passage south through the Irish Sea to Plymouth, and I was on watch on the bridge at the time. A school of about 15 came within yards of the ship 😃
