In the glen there is an age-old tradition of hanging squirrel feeders on tree branches and filling them with nuts and pieces of fruit. The squirrels raise the lid with their head, leaving their front paws free to gather the bounty. With free access to favourite foods they seem happy to leave nearby birdfeeders alone.

Beautiful photos. And a good idea about feeding the squirrels so they don’t bother the bird feeders.

In my part of the USA, there is a tradition of chasing away the squirrels that eat all the food in the bird feeder hence depriving me of both the enjoyment of birds outside my window as well depriving the birds of a good meal.

Yes, I have heard that before, especially with grey squirrels. Here in the Highlands the red squirrel is a protected species and we take great joy in their company :o)

Hmmm. I have an open box, I’m not sure where I got it from. I don’t think the top flips. I thought it was a nesting box… but maybe I could use it as a squirrel feeder. Then at least it will be one more thing out of my patio… (one objective was to make my patio/storage room more usable this summer). 🙂
