Haibun: Life’s New Garden

The criss-cross waves of high water tell us the tide is turning. Returning to the mouth of the river, the cygnets carry a glimpse of the sea. The pen is doing what she has always done. Prepare her young for the wider world, showing them where and when to feed. Her cob swims quietly by her side, creating an easy slipstream for cygnets who swim behind them. When the current becomes too strong they climb on their mother’s back.

We stand and watch them glide by and thank them for our own glimpse into another world.  I am enchanted by their deep communication and understanding.  Everything is done in total silence. Neither the cygnets nor their parents make a single sound. All I can hear is our smile.

  7. Lovely haibun as usual Xenia. I love your haiku with the lilies of the valley. The pics of the swans are beautiful. I love the silence and the knowing in this. You always write from such a deep sense of peace. Love to Rigor and Pearl.

  12. Don’t panic, Xenia, I’m on the laptop so there will be no predictive text re-naming this morning! First you were Denis and then Jane called you Kim!
    Your photographs wowed me. I keep pestering my husband to let me use his camera, it was new several years ago and never taken out of its box. My little Kodak Playtouch isn’t up to the job and is very old now.
    Now to the nitty gritty – the words! I love the ‘criss-cross waves’, which create a sound that I’ve often heard on the Broads. I love the way you zoom in on the pen and her cygnets, such close detail mirrored by the photographs. You’ve captured Nature’s silence beautifully, especially with the last of the lilies of the valley. 🙂 xxx

I do hope you can use your husband’s camera or otherwise invest in a new one for yourself that you can play with to your heart’s content. It will be lovely to have something to capture family photos of Lucas growing up and all the wonderful nature around you. 🤗💖 xxx
